As you may know, tempura is a popular Japanese dish of deep-fried seafood or vegetables. While it was originally introduced to Japan by Portuguese missionaries and traders in the 1500s, the Japanese spent centuries perfecting the dish we know and love today. Now, following in their ancestors’ footsteps, a bold group of young Japanese men have truly brought tempura into the 21st century.

Operating under the handle Team Mayakashi, the group has uploaded a video to popular Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga, of themselves coating a Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) in tempura batter, submerging it in boiling oil, and proceeding to eat it.

The PSP is a delicate piece of machinery, and placing it in boiling oil could beget such risks as the internal battery exploding, the plastic shell melting, or the emission of toxic gasses.

Though it’s unclear why they would put themselves in this kind of danger, the video depicts the perhaps too-enthusiastic members of Team Mayakashi thoroughly enjoying themselves as they deep-fry their PSP.

In contrast to the group’s lighthearted attitude toward this culinary adventure, Internet users have criticized the act with comments such as:

“Don’t you have anything better to do?”
“This is way too irresponsible.”
“This isn’t even interesting to watch; I don’t get why you’re laughing.”
“I can’t believe you’re doing this at a time when you can sell it used for a high price.”

Indeed, with shortages of PSPs in Japan since the release of the wildly popular Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, it is easy to see why attempting to consume one’s PSP would seem slightly wasteful.

Once again, the PSP is a sensitive device, and submerging it in boiling liquid for any length of time will undoubtedly void its warranty—and possibly yours. Please, do not try this at home.
