Sure, a glass table can be used as a convenient, hands-free holder when you want to view your smartphone while lying down, but that sort of creative laziness brings issues with it. Isn’t putting an extra layer glass between you and your phone going to result in less-than-optimal viewing experience? How are you going to get at the touchscreen to operate the phone? And what about the sound?

That’s why we’re glad to bring you a real DIY smartphone home theater solution. You’re going to have put a bit of effort into it than just lying underneath a glass table, but it’s totally worth it – the Internet tells us so!

It’s pretty difficult to be a home theater enthusiast in Japan. With the size of apartments these days, you don’t have space to rock a 65-inch TV screen, and short of taping six inches of polystyrene to your paper-thin walls as makeshift sound-proofing, your neighbors are going to be on the phone to your landlord the second you fire up your 7.1 channel Dolby Digital surround sound system. Guess it’s just time to give up…

Or is it? Grab your X-Acto knife; it’s time to reveal a DIY home theater system!

This is a super low-cost way to turn your smartphone or tablet into a “sweet” home entertainment system. This “cardboard movie theater” is inspiring people all over Japan to turn their handheld devices into a hands-free movie experience. It’s everyone’s dream to watch a movie lying down right? With some scissors and a cardboard box, you can stop dreaming it and start watching it. After all, Sony , Oculus Rift and even Samsung are all telling us to strap screens to our faces – clearly this is the future of entertainment!

“I also made a simplified movie theater. It’s the best.”

“Made a smart phone movie theater in 10 minutes so I could watch Sherlock. My brother said he wanted to try it out, so I had him watch Frozen, and it turned out like this!”

It may not look like much from the outside, but inside you can really tune out the rest of the world and enjoy a movie.

People are so excited to make and try it out for themselves!
